Pilots have many tasks in a very complex environment in flight and on the ground. Part of the complexity of this environment can be attributed to the airborne radio communications equipment. Because the results of miscommunication can be catastrophic, voice communication is such a vital aspect of the aviation system. Advanced aircraft communications systems also involve a digital data radio communication technique as a promising technology that may bring many benefits to the aviation community. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in conjunction with airlines and avionics manufacturers, is undertaking the development and deployment of a set of datalink services to enhance air/ground communications in the en route environment. In this globally coordinated effort, digital data communication between controllers and flight crews is being introduced. Out of necessity, there is a transition period when digital data and conventional analog voice radios must coexist.
