With the global economic development and the amount of cars increased year by year, various problems in traffic management has become increasingly prominent, and the vehicle overrun is one of the main reasons causing vehicle traffic accidents on the highway. A new scheme for vehicle three-dimensional size detection based on laser ranging is proposed in this paper, and a detection system is developed to measure the vehicle three-dimensional size. What does play an important role in this system is the core technology using laser ranging method to measure vehicle three-dimensional size. In this paper, laser radar is taken as the main measuring equipment of distance, which is used to collect vehicle three-dimensional point cloud data. In addition, the point cloud original data is preprocessed with the methods including coordinate transformation and median filtering. In this way, the length, width and height of vehicle on the highway can be measured dynamically. The result of experiments indicates that with this scheme the vehicle three-dimensional size can be measured quickly and accurately on the highway, besides, the scheme may be popularly used in related fields.
