This study aims to design a distance warning system to help drive safely and avoid collisions. The system design is made in two stages, i.e. detecting vehicles and estimating the detected vehicles distance. The method used to detect vehicles is Haar method and HOG method. Whereas, the method used to estimate distance is Width-based method. The result showed that Haar method was better in detecting vehicles with the average of TPR by 75%. Based on the result of distance estimation, the value MSE (Mean Squared Error) obtained was 0.333 for van type vehicle.
