Ionic self-assembled multilayers of nm-thicknesses are deposited on long period fiber gratings. We observe dramatic resonant-wavelength shifts even with nm-thick films. We demonstrate the feasibility of this highly controllable deposition-technique for fine-tuning grating properties, and for their use as biosensors.
