We demonstrate long-period gratings whose attenuation can be changed by 25 dB in a 48-nm spectral band, with ambient index changes of only 2.7/spl times/10/sup -4/. This is achieved by inducing coupling to ultra sensitive cladding modes in engineered fiber waveguides.
