It has been shown that the central wavelengths of the attenuation bands seen in the transmission spectrum of a long period gratings (LPG) exhibit a dependence on both the thickness and refractive index of thin film overlay materials. The form of the wavelength shift has been discussed in qualitative terms, and is predicted by a simple model.
