The invention relates to a method for controlling a hydrostatic transmission (13) of a motor vehicle, the hydrostatic transmission (13) comprising a bypass circuit (11) provided with a valve (12), coupled between two complementary hydraulic circuits (9, 10) each one coupling a hydraulic pump (3) driven by a power train (2) and coupled to a first axle of the vehicle to a hydraulic motor (4) coupled to a second axle of the vehicle, the method comprising a first mode (MODE 4X4LOCK), in which the transmission (13) is activated and a second mode (MODE 4X2), in which the transmission (13) is deactivated so that motor torque is prevented from being transmitted to the second axle and the vehicle operates with two drive wheels. The method also comprises a third mode (MODE 4X4AUTO), in which the transmission (13) is activated and the opening of the valve (12) of the bypass circuit (11) is controlled so as to transmit a portion of the motor torque to the second axle of the vehicle, said portion being variable according to an operating parameter (V) of the vehicle.
