Introduced are a method and an apparatus for failure control of an electric power steering system. The method for failure control of an electric power steering system, comprises: an input step which receives inputs regarding an actual steering angle of a steering wheel and a motor steering angle based on rotation of a steering motor; and a safe mode operation step which steers a vehicle wheel at an angle corresponding to the actual steering angle using the steering motor when an angular difference between the actual steering angle and the motor steering angle is equal or higher than a reference value, thereby preventing a vehicle accident by steering the vehicle wheel in an emergency.

    본 발명은, 스티어링휠의 실제조향각과, 조향모터의 회전을 기반으로 한 모터조향각을 입력받는 입력단계; 및 상기 실제조향각과 모터조향각의 차이가 기준값 이상시, 조향모터를 이용하여 실제조향각에 상응하는 각도만큼 차륜을 조향 작동시키는 안전모드작동단계;를 포함하여 구성되는 전동식 파워스티어링 시스템의 고장 제어방법 및 장치가 소개된다.
