To provide a position detector capable of detecting, with high accuracy, the position of a shaft moving forward and backward in the axial direction.SOLUTION: A stroke sensor 1 for detecting the position of a rack shaft 13 comprises: an excitation coil 31 that generates an alternating-current magnetic field; a detection body 2 that is fixed to the rack shaft 13 and which the flux of the alternating-current magnetic field interlinks with; and detection coils 32, 33 which the flux of the alternating-current magnetic field interlinks with. The detection coils 32, 33 include first sections 321, 331 and second sections 322, 332 in which an induction voltage is generated by the alternating-current magnetic field, and connecting lines 323, 333 that connect one axial ends of the first sections 321, 331 and the other axial ends of the second sections 322, 332 together. The first sections 321, 331 and the second sections 322, 332 respectively lie, at least in part, in an arrangement direction perpendicular to the axial direction. The detection body 2 includes a first detection body part 21 facing the first sections 321, 331 and a second detection body part 32 facing the second sections 322, 332.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
