To provide a position detector which can precisely detect the position of a shaft which moves back and forth in an axial direction.SOLUTION: A stroke sensor 1 for detecting the position of a rack shaft 13 which moves back and forth in an axial direction includes: a target 2 attached to the rack shaft 13; an excitation coil 31 for generating an AC magnetic field; and detection coils 32 and 33 arranged along the axial direction of the rack shaft 13. The magnitude of the voltage induced by the detection coils 32, 33 is changed according to the position of the target 2.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
