To provide an eddy current-type brake device for an elevator apparatus capable of obtaining sufficient braking force.SOLUTION: An eddy current-type brake device 10 comprises magnet units 11, 12 and an operative mechanism 30. The magnet units 11, 12 include at least one magnet. The operative mechanism 30 makes the magnet units 11, 12 move between an actuated position approaching a guide rail 8 and activating brake, and a non-actuated position more separated from the guide rail 8 than the actuated position. The operative mechanism 30 has a spring 32 and an actuator 33. The spring 32 expands/contracts in an expansion/contraction direction D2 which is along the direction from an elevator car or a counterweight to the guide rail 8 and makes the magnet units 11, 12 move in the expansion/contraction direction D2.
