The invention provides an eddy current type brake device which is installed on an elevator car or a balance weight which moves along a guide rail extending in the vertical direction. An eddy current brake device includes a magnet unit and an operating mechanism. The magnet unit includes at least one magnet. The operating mechanism moves the magnet unit between an operating position at which the magnet unit approaches the guide rail to operate the brake and a non-operating position at which the magnet unit is farther from the guide rail than the operating position. The working mechanism has a spring and an actuator. The spring expands and contracts along an expansion and contraction direction, so that the magnet unit moves along the expansion and contraction direction, and the expansion and contraction direction is a direction from the elevator car or the balance weight to the guide rail. The actuator contracts the spring in the expansion/contraction direction.
