The invention provides an eddy current type brake device which is installed on an elevator car or a balance weight moving along a guide rail, the eddy current type brake device is provided with a magnet unit and an operation mechanism, and the guide rail extends along the vertical direction. The magnet unit includes at least one magnet. The operating mechanism moves the magnet unit between an operating position at which the magnet unit approaches the guide rail and actuates the brake and a non-operating position at which the magnet unit is farther from the guide rail than the operating position.
