To make capacity of a battery for securing safety small and reduce a weight with low costs in a hybrid rotary wing aircraft in which a rotary wing is driven mainly by an internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: A hybrid rotary wing aircraft includes: a first internal combustion engine (31) and a second internal combustion engine (32); and two or more rotary wings (21q, 22q, 21r, 22r) that can be connected via one-way clutches (51q, 52q, 51r, 52r) and output a lift force. When one of the first internal combustion engine (31) and the second internal combustion engine (32) fails, the other can drive a half number of the rotary wings (21q, 22q, 21r, 22r). The rotary wings (21q, 22q, 21r, 22r) are connected to motor generators (41q, 42q, 41r, 42r), respectively. At least four of the rotary wings (21q, 22q, 21r, 22r) include a variable pitch mechanism (26).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
