PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor drive unit and power-assisted bicycle which can detect torque by a magnetostriction type torque sensor, can detect rotation of a crank shaft or the like, and excellently maintain the toque detection performance without transmission of the auxiliary driving force from a motor to the crank shaft when a rider stops pedaling.SOLUTION: A motor drive unit includes a first wall part which extends in the direction orthogonal to a rotational shaft 21a. A control printed circuit board 24a is arranged on the side opposite to a rotor part 21b of a motor 21 with respect to the first wall part, and is arranged so that at least part of it overlaps the motor 21 when the control printed circuit board 24a is viewed from the axial direction of the rotational shaft 21a of the motor 21. A control unit 24 is connected to the control printed circuit board 24a and has a connection member extending in the direction of the motor 21 from the control printed circuit board 24a.     【課題】磁歪式のトルクセンサによりトルクを検出でき、かつクランク軸などの回転を検出することができながら、搭乗者がペダルを漕ぐことを止めた際に、モータからの補助駆動力がクランク軸に伝達されることがなく、トルクの検出能力を良好に維持することができるモータ駆動ユニット及び電動アシスト自転車を提供する。【解決手段】モータ駆動ユニットは、回転軸21aと直交する方向に伸びる第1の壁部を備える。また、制御用プリント基板24aは、第1の壁部に対し、モータ21のロータ部21bと反対側に配置されるとともに、制御用プリント基板24aをモータ21の回転軸21aの軸方向から視た場合に、モータ21と少なくとも一部が重なるように配置される。制御部24は、制御用プリント基板24aに接続され、制御用プリント基板24aからモータ21の方向に伸びる接続部材を有する。接続部材は、第1の壁部を貫通して、モータ21の方向に伸びる。【選択図】図2
