An electric vehicle charging station comprising a housing (102, Fig. 4), a DC power supply (103, Fig 1), a cable 104 for supplying the direct current to a vehicle (101, Fig. 1), a storage region (402, Fig. 4) to hold the cable when not in use, a powered roller 502 and a pinch roller 503 to drive the cable in and out of the storage region, and a cable guide 504 which ensures the cable folds 702, 801 repeatably during retraction. The storage region may be defined by a container 501 in the housing. The container may have an orifice for the cable, and may support the drive rollers. Further, the charging station may include a rechargeable battery (105, Fig. 1) to allow for fast charging at a high power level, the secondary battery being charged from mains electricity or renewable energy such as wind (107, Fig. 1) or solar (108, Fig. 1). The cable may comprise a plurality of conductors to allow flexibility at appropriate current ratings, and may be of a type where the magnetic fields cancel out.
