A pintle hitch assembly (20, figure 2) for a vehicle comprising: a base member (33, figure 5) that is mounted to a vehicle and pintle body (30); a rotatable shaft portion mounted to the base member and rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the shaft portion; a pintle hook carried on the shaft portion that receives a towing eye of a trailer; a retaining member 31 movable between a closed and open position; the base member includes a locking means 44 that prevents the rotation of the pintle hook relative to the base member; the base member including a drive means that selectively engages and disengages the locking means 44; wherein the base member includes a controller connected to the base member; the controller includes identifying means that automatically identify whether a trailer being connected to the pintle assembly has a fixed or rotation towing eye; and the controller operates the drive means 43 to engage/disengage the locking means depending on whether the trailer has a rotating or fixed towing eye.
