A first infrastructure element (e.g. beacon 17) detects a perturbation (e.g. obstacle) in autonomous transportation network 10. Related information is generated and transmitted to previous and subsequent infrastructure elements in the network. A perturbation minimisation strategy may be retrieved from memory. The information or strategy may be transmitted to further infrastructure elements. An alternate route may be generated for an autonomous vehicle, it may be slowed or a travel direction in the network may be changed. Also disclosed is a network comprising tracks 15 for running autonomous vehicles 20; multiple infrastructure elements connected by communications links (200, Fig.2); an associated sensor to identify perturbations in vehicle flow on the tracks and generate related information; and a memory storing perturbation minimisation strategies for the vehicles. Also disclosed is an infrastructure element detecting a perturbation on an initial route of an autonomous vehicle; generating related information; retrieving perturbation minimisation strategies for the vehicle; transmitting the information or strategies to a previous infrastructure element and from there to the vehicle so that it can navigate an alternate route.
