An overload testing apparatus for testing an overload indicator of a lifting apparatus 210 comprising a platform 212, comprising a tether 240 and a loading gauge 228. The tether is secured to a tether point 230, which may be secured within a concrete floor and applies a loading force to the platform generated by operation of the platform and optionally by a ratchet mechanism such that the loading gauge indicates a loading force required to activate the overload indicator. The apparatus may include a mounting member 220 arranged over the platform, which applies force to the platform evenly and may be arranged to fit a number of different widths of platform. The loading gauge may be a strain gauge. Also disclosed is a method of using such and apparatus. Also disclosed is a device having an extendable body 320 having a connection arm 320 for receiving a tether 340.
