A steering system of a vehicle, typically an autonomous vehicle, is instructed to perform a lateral steering action, for example changing lanes or repositioning within a lane, depending on whether a steering wheel angle θ is greater than a threshold angle θlane. Torque to a steering wheel is determined and applied based on comparing the steering wheel angle θ to threshold angle θlane; typically the steering wheel angle may increase as the steering wheel angle increases from a reference angle to threshold angle θlane, and may decrease as the steering wheel angle increases above threshold angle θlane towards a boundary angle θhi. The threshold angle may vary depending on vehicle speed.
