A vehicle system which determines whether an autonomous host vehicle can traverse an environmental obstacle. If the autonomous host vehicle can traverse the environmental obstacle 410, an active suspension system is controlled 420 in accordance with the environmental obstacle to traverse the obstacle. This may be used for driving in off-road conditions. The obstacle may be detected using environmental sensors 405. If there is a risk of vehicle roll-over, the system may also determine whether passengers should exit or leave the vehicle before traversing the obstacle 425 and generate an alert or warning 445 if this is the case. The vehicle may only negotiate the obstacle once it is determined that all passengers or occupants have exited the vehicle. The vehicle may traverse the obstacle based on a user authorization input, which may be from a wireless or remote device.
