A method and apparatus for monitoring an electrical vehicle to compute an expected range of travel. The monitoring arrangement 200 includes a control arrangement 106 to control power exchange between the battery unit 102 and the electrical motor 104. Disposed in the battery unit 102 is a sensor arrangement 204 for measuring energy flows and energy dissipating processes during the operation of the vehicle. Information from the battery, control arrangement and motor are then sent to computing means 108 for range analysis. To compute range the monitoring arrangement 200 may monitor: motor and battery power dissipation; power delivered to the motor; and regenerated power returned to the battery. The monitoring arrangement may also receive information regarding road conditions e.g. wind speed, road surface conditions, terrain profile, traffic conditions via a network interface to aid in the range calculation. The range estimation may be updated at regular intervals. The computing means 108 may reserve charging stations along a route where the recommendation of charging stations is informed by the remaining range of the vehicle. The sensor arrangement 204 may have temperature sensors 206 in the battery unit 102 to detect hot spots and provide overload protection.
