A means of collision avoidance for vehicles, such as a heavy goods vehicle (HGV), comprising; detecting at one or more sensors 54 mounted on a host vehicle the position of an object 56 relative to the vehicle at two or more time instances. An approximation of the objects trajectory relative to the host vehicle is made based on its detected position. A prediction of the objects future position relative to the vehicle is made, in dependence on its approximated trajectory, and is used to estimate the likelihood of a collision between the host vehicle and the object. If the likelihood of a collision between the host vehicle and object exceeds a predetermined threshold, an alarm signal is triggered so as to warn the driver. The alarm signal may further trigger autonomous operation of braking and/or steering systems so as to guide the host vehicle away from an impending collision.
