A device 1 is provided for generate downforce acting in a first direction, for example for climbing a wall. Device 1 has a chassis 3 with a lower face 9b facing in the first direction and extending over a first planar area. A means to draw air 13 from a volume 21 formed under lower face 9b is provided to generate a low pressure region between chassis 3 and a surface over which the chassis 3 travels, so as to generate downforce to hold the chassis on the surface. A plurality of formations 33 are provided on lower face 9b to form an effective surface area on the lower face 9b larger than the first area. A seal with a flexible membrane, and with a base and sidewall flexible in one direction and rigid in perpendicular directions, is also provided.
