The invention relates to a vehicle driving assistance method for following a target comprising: detecting an input condition for the driving assistance method; providing an acceleration setpoint on the basis of the driving conditions; calculating a vehicle speed setpoint (41, 43, 95); calculating a wheel torque setpoint (50, 54, 56) calculating a gearbox input torque setpoint (57) on the basis of the engaged gear ratio and the wheel torque setpoint; controlling the engine speed on the basis of the gearbox input torque setpoint; calculating a clutch torque setpoint on the basis of the gearbox input torque setpoint and the open state of the clutch; controlling the opening of the clutch on the basis of the clutch torque setpoint, the method also including the step according to which the temperature of the clutch is compared with at least one threshold value and, when the temperature is greater than the threshold value, a modification is made to the vehicle driving assistance.
