The present invention addresses the problem of providing a method for optimizing gradient data, which are provided to an onboard unit of a rail vehicle for the calculation of braking curves, so that the resulting braking curves improve operation with respect to energy consumption and time loss while ensuring the required railway safety. This problem is solved by means of a method for optimizing gradient data for a railway network segment secured by means of a stopping point, which gradient data are provided to an onboard unit of a rail vehicle for the calculation of braking curves, the method comprising the following method steps: • a) for the segment before the stopping point, a first partial segment which lies directly before the stopping point and which is located between the stopping point and an equilibrium point is determined; • b) determining at least one second partial segment which is located before the first partial segment in the direction of travel of the rail vehicle and which corresponds substantially to the maximum train length permissible on the segment; • c) at a specifiable number of points distributed over the length of the second partial segment, averaged values for the gradient profile, which is represented by a series of real gradient values, are determined and are provided as optimized gradient data, wherein the averaged values are not allowed to be more permissive than an actual gradient value, and d) transmitting said optimized gradient data to the onboard unit and calculating an optimized braking curve using said optimized gradient data.
