A method for controlling an electric motor of an electric bicycle includes detecting (S1.1) an input torque at at least two different points in time, detecting (S1.2) a cadence of a crank at at least two different points in time, determining (S2.1) a change in the input torque over time on the basis of the detected input torque at at least two different points in time, determining (S2.2) a change in the cadence over time on the basis of the detected cadence at at least two different points in time, determining (S3) a base torque depending on the change in the input torque over time and depending on the change in the cadence over time, and controlling (S6) the electric motor with a target torque depending on the base torque. In the determining (S3), the dependence of the base torque on the change in the input torque over time decreases as the cadence increases, and the dependence of the base torque on the change in the cadence over time increases as the cadence increases
