The invention relates to a method for determining longitudinal acceleration setpoints, in which the acceleration setpoints are determined so that they follow a longitudinal acceleration profile comprising the following three consecutive phases: a first transient acceleration phase (TT1) during which the time derivative of the longitudinal acceleration is a first predetermined derivative (J1), a stabilised acceleration phase (TS) during which the acceleration is a so-called target acceleration which is not zero and which is constant during a so-called stabilised time period, a second transient acceleration phase (TT2) during which the time derivative of the longitudinal acceleration is a second predetermined derivative (J3) having a sign opposite the sign of the first derivative (J1) and ending at a final zero acceleration, wherein the trapezoidal acceleration profile is started at an initial trapezoidal acceleration profile comprising a predetermined initial target acceleration and a predetermined initial stabilised time period, and wherein, during the step of executing the trapezoidal acceleration profile, the trapezoidal acceleration profile is adapted by updating only the target acceleration and the stabilised time period as a function of a first set of at least one parameter which represents a behaviour of the host vehicle and a second set of at least one parameter which represents a behaviour of a target.
