The invention relates to a method for the open-loop or closed-loop control of the driving and braking behavior of a leading first vehicle (2) of a vehicle train (1), which is or should be loosely coupled and is composed of the leading first motor vehicle (2) and at least one second motor vehicle (4, 6, 8, 10, 12), during a trip of the vehicle train (1). The first motor vehicle (2) leading the vehicle train (1) and the at least one second motor vehicle (4, 6, 8, 10, 12) each form a participant of the vehicle train (1). The invention is characterized in that, already before the start of the trip of the vehicle train (1), participant data characterizing a driving and braking behavior of the participant (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) in question existing at a time point preceding the start of the trip are determined or obtained by each participant (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) of the vehicle train (1) itself and are transferred from each participant (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) different from the leading first motor vehicle (2) to the leading first motor vehicle (2), and/or are obtained by the leading first motor vehicle (2) from infrastructure (X) that is external to the vehicle train (1) and that has previously received from all participants (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) the participant data determined or obtained by all participants (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) themselves.
