The invention relates to a telescopable steering shaft (4) for a motor vehicle, comprising an inner shaft (7), which is received in an outer shaft so as to be displaceable coaxially and in the axial direction of the steering shaft (4), wherein the inner shaft (7) and outer shaft (5) have corresponding profiles in cross-section for the transmission of a torque, said steering shaft being provided in a simple manner, unsusceptible to tolerance, with an energy absorption device for a crash situation in that a profile sleeve (22) is fixed between the inner shaft (7) and the outer shaft (5) to either the inner shaft (7) or the outer shaft (6) and in that the other shaft is provided with at least one protrusion (25) protruding into the radial region of the profile sleeve (22), which protrusion deforms the profile sleeve (22) as motion energy is absorbed if, in a crash situation, the outer shaft (5) is slid over the inner shaft (7) over an axial displacement region (27).
