The invention relates to a method for controlling an electro-pneumatic service brake device of a vehicle, in which method, starting from an at least partially applied state of the service brake, a target release brake pressure to be obtained for at least partially releasing the service brake is produced in at least one pneumatic service brake cylinder (48, 50), wherein the production of the target release brake pressure in the at least one pneumatic service brake cylinder (48, 50) is carried out under a pressure gradient. According to the invention, the pressure gradient prevailing during the release of the service brake is actively limited, wherein the degree of the limitation is set in accordance with operating conditions of the vehicle and lies within a range between no limitation and a maximum limitation. In this way, the development of noise during brake release can be positively influenced.
