A method of authenticating a vehicle detected by a vehicle detection system which includes one or more detectors (2), a transceiver device (40) corresponding to each detector (2) and a processing unit (3). Each detector is configured to measure magnetic fields in a volume of space at least partially overlapping a corresponding space (P 1 , ..., P 16 ) for a vehicle (7). Each transceiver device (40) is arranged proximate to the respective space (P 1 , ..., P 16 ) for a vehicle and includes a wireless personal area network module (15). The processing unit (3) is configured to communicate with an external device (47) and to determine presence of a vehicle (7) in each space (P 1 , ..., P 16 ) in dependence upon measurements from one or more detectors (2). The method includes, in response to detecting a vehicle (7) entering a space corresponding to a detector (2), one or more transceiver devices (40) broadcast a plurality of challenge messages (46) according to a schedule. Each challenge message (46) has a corresponding correct response. The one or more transceiver devices (40) broadcast each challenge message (46) before a subsequent challenge message (46) is broadcast. The method also includes, for each challenge message (46) broadcast, in response to one or more transceiver devices (40) receiving at least one corresponding response message broadcast by a wireless personal area network transceiver in or on the vehicle (7), incrementing a number of received responses and checking whether the response message corresponds to the correct response. The method also includes, in response to the number of received responses exceeds a first threshold and a fraction of correct responses exceeds a second threshold, authenticating the vehicle (7) by transmitting a message to the external device (47) to indicate that an authorised vehicle has entered the space.
