A method of controlling a parking operation of a vehicle by a parking assistańce system involves:capturing the position of a vehicle user located close to but outside of the vehicle;determining a provisional target position and a provisional motion path for the vehicle based on a vehicle starting position and the position of the vehicle user;checking whether the provisional target position and/or the motion of the vehicle into the provisional target position along the provisional motion path would cause a collision with the vehicle user; andif a result of the checking is affirmative, then changing the provisional target position and/or the provisional motion path so that no collision with the vehicle user will occur at the changed target position and/or along the changed motion path.
