A silane-based additive, rubber formulations comprising the additive, tires having a tread portion made with the additive, and methods of forming these products are provided. Uncured rubber formulations according to preferred embodiments of the present invention include (1) a rubber host polymer or polymer blend, such as natural rubber and/or synthetic rubber; (2) reinforced silicon dioxide filler; (3) a methylene donor compound; (4) a silane containing one or more of the aforementioned mesh-forming polymer moieties, and (5) a phloroglucinol resin. In particular, the mesh is preferably able to be generated in situ. The cured rubber formulation should comprise silica, in the rubber matrix, having a load-bearing path-reinforced interpenetrating polymer grid coupled thereto, rather than being coupled directly to rubber chains through sulfide bonds.
