Techniques and systems are described that implement evasive steering assist (ESA) with a pre-activation phase. The ESA system predicts an impending collision with the object and enters a pre-activation phase. The pre-activation phase results in a required drop in steering force prior to determining that a collision is imminent. At a later time, the ESA system determines that a collision is impending and performs an activation phase. The activation stage generates a steering force that effectively avoids collision. By performing a pre-activation phase prior to determining an impending collision, the ESA system may provide the additional steering force required to avoid the collision without delay, while leaving the driver of the vehicle unable to feel a decrease in steering force.
