Embodiments of the invention relate to a vehicle for performing a minimum risk maneuver and a method of operating the same. The autonomous vehicle includes: at least one sensor configured to detect an ambient environment of the vehicle to generate ambient environment information; a controller configured to control an operation of the vehicle; and a processor. The processor is configured to: monitor a vehicle state to generate vehicle state information; determining whether a lowest risk manipulation is required; performing the minimum risk maneuver by causing the controller to control automatic driving of the vehicle based on the need for the minimum risk maneuver; providing an indication of minimum risk maneuver initiation to a user within the vehicle; and turning on and off an external indicator indicating the execution of the lowest risk maneuver.
