The invention relates to the technical field of power batteries, in particular to a thermal runaway suppression device and method for a power battery, and the device comprises a detection module which is used for detecting whether the thermal runaway of the power battery occurs or not; the cooling module is used for outputting a cooling medium; the at least one transmission pipeline is correspondingly arranged between the plurality of battery modules of the power battery and the cooling module; and the control module is used for opening the corresponding transmission pipeline under the condition that the detection module detects that any battery module of the power battery is subjected to thermal runaway, so that the battery module subjected to thermal runaway is cooled by using the cooling medium until a preset suppression condition is met. The battery module can be accurately detected, when the power battery is in thermal runaway, only the battery module related to thermal runaway in the power battery needs to be replaced, the whole battery pack does not need to be replaced, economic losses caused by thermal runaway can be reduced to the maximum extent, and the safety of a vehicle and a user is effectively guaranteed.
