The present disclosure provides "prevention of electric vehicle braking torque". When a motor is deactivated and a corresponding inverter is disabled, a controller activates an engine for propelling a vehicle such that the motor rotates at a rotational speed due to the propulsion, and commands a variable voltage control circuit to generate a target input voltage for the inverter based on a speed limit of the vehicle, such that the rotational speed of the motor corresponding to the travel of the vehicle results in zero braking torque from the motor and zero charging current flow to a traction battery.
