An automobile retarder comprises a rotor assembly, a stator assembly and an energy consumption assembly, the rotor assembly comprises at least one electromagnet, the stator assembly comprises at least one armature winding, the energy consumption assembly comprises an energy consumption resistor electrically connected with the output end of each armature winding, and the electromagnet of the rotor assembly comprises an iron core and an excitation winding wound on the iron core. The system further comprises a power supply, a current controller and a sensor assembly, the input end of the exciting winding, the power supply and the sensor assembly are all electrically connected with the current controller, and the current controller is used for adjusting exciting current provided by the power supply to the exciting winding according to the automobile running working condition detected by the sensor assembly. According to the automobile retarder, the retarder can be flexibly adjusted according to the driving working condition of an automobile so as to control the braking speed of the automobile, and the circuit structure is more simplified. In addition, the invention further provides a control method of the automobile retarder.
