The invention relates to a rail vehicle system, comprising: i) a rail section having a monitoring device, in particular an axle counter, which is designed to monitor the state of the rail section; ii) a rail vehicle passing forward and/or rearward through the rail section; and iii) a control device, which is coupled to the rail vehicle and which is designed to carry out a hidden train identification using the states of the rail vehicle and the monitoring device; the invention is characterized in that iv) the control device is further designed to confirm whether a short vehicle whose position in the rail vehicle system is not detected satisfies a usage criterion and, if the usage criterion is satisfied, to carry out a hidden train identification in the fast travel mode at a high speed.
