According to the invention, in the method, the occupancy state of the rail section (20) is monitored by means of a rail section monitoring device (30) having a signal processing time (Tv) and is reported as free or occupied, and before the rail vehicle (50) enters the rail section (20) reported as free or after the rail vehicle (50) exits the rail section (20), the occupancy state of the rail section (20) is monitored by means of the signal processing time (Tv). An area (B) between the rail vehicle (50) and an optically recognizable marking (70, 71, 72) provided in or at one end (21, 22) of the rail section (20) is monitored with at least one camera (81, 82), and if within a predetermined minimum observation time period at least as large as the signal processing time (Tv) of the rail section monitoring device (30), the marking (70, 71, 72) is detected. A camera signal (KS) of the camera (81, 82) will display an unoccupied area (B) between the rail vehicle (50) and the marking (70, 71, 72), and at least at the expiration of a minimum observation time period, the rail section monitoring device (30) reports the rail section (20) to be free, and the rail section (20) and the area (B) between the marking (70, 71, 72) and the rail vehicle (50) report that there is no hidden train if the rail section (20) and the area (B) between the marking (70, 71, 72) and the rail vehicle (50) are free.
