The method comprises the steps that an auxiliary braking signal is received, and the engine braking force upper limit of a target vehicle is determined based on an engine braking power curve and an engine rotating speed range of the target vehicle; acquiring a braking force required for downhill of the target vehicle at the target downhill section; under the condition that the target vehicle is the vehicle braked through the engine, the upper limit of the braking force of the engine is smaller than the braking force needed for downhill, and the current rotating speed of the engine of the target vehicle is smaller than the maximum braking rotating speed of the engine of the target vehicle, the gear of a gearbox of the target vehicle is lowered; and under the condition that the upper limit of the braking force of the engine is smaller than the braking force needed for downhill and the current rotating speed of the engine of the target vehicle is not smaller than the maximum braking rotating speed of the engine, the engine of the target vehicle is controlled to conduct braking at the maximum braking gear, and an early warning that constant-speed braking cannot be conducted is initiated. By adopting the method, the brake control effect can be ensured.
