Methods and systems are described herein that enable an autonomous vehicle (AV) to determine a path to a parking location. The AV will determine a desired parking position (DSL) associated with the service request. A motion control system of the AV will move the AV along a path to the DSL. When moving along the path, the awareness system of the AV will detect environmental conditions in the vicinity of the DSL. The environmental condition will be a parameter associated with a parking rule. The AV applies a parking rule to the environmental condition to determine whether the parking rule allows the AV to park at the DSL. If the parking rule allows the AV to park at the DSL, the motion control system moves the AV to the DSL and parks at the DSL. Otherwise, the motion control system will not stop the AV at the DSL.
