The invention relates to ADS aware system aware free space verification. A method performed by a free space verification system is provided for supporting and/or providing confidence of a perceptual system of an ADS of a vehicle to detect object presence. The free space verification system obtains sensor data through a vehicle-mounted ambient environment detection sensor; generating, by the perception system, perception data based on the fused sensor data; determining that the perception system perceives, based on the perception data, at least a first area in the vehicle surroundings without objects; detecting the sensors for the surroundings, individually evaluating their acquired sensor data to encounter potential sensor-specific detections in at least a first extended region surrounding at least a first region; and determining that at least the first region is verified as having no object when a potential sensor-specific detection within at least the first extended region for a predeterminable number and/or combination of ambient environment detection sensors meets a free-space verification criterion.
