Aspects of the present disclosure provide a method of controlling a vehicle 100 in an autonomous driving mode. For example, the method may include receiving, by one or more processors of a brake controller 230 of the vehicle, a braking profile of a trajectory to be followed by the vehicle in the future. The brake controller may determine whether to use one or both of regenerative braking and friction braking based on the brake profile. The vehicle is controlled in accordance with a braking profile based on a determination of whether to use one or both of regenerative braking and friction braking.
