The invention discloses a start system and method for a locomotive train tail main engine. The start method includes the steps of judging whether the correspondence between the train tail main engine and a driver control device is established before start or not according to the state information, in the running process, stored by the train tail main engine before start, starting the train tail main engine in a first start mode if no correspondence is established between the train tail main engine and the driver control device before start, judging whether instant outage happens to the train tail main engine before start or not according to the time information, in the running process, stored by the train tail main engine if the correspondence is established between the train tail main engine and the driver control device, starting the train tail main engine in a second start mode if no instant outage happens to the train tail main engine before start, and starting the train tail main engine in a third start mode if instant outage happens to the train tail main engine before start. According to the method, the train tail main engine is started in different modes for different outage reasons, and the failure problem caused by the instant outage of a power supply of the train tail main engine is effectively solved.
