Abstract It is well known that three main parts construct the whole body of insect which are head, thorax and abdomen. Benefiting from this body structure, the insects have been occupying the Earth for billions of years. To imitate the gait of the insect better, we designed a novel segmented head-thorax-abdomen hexapod robot which is separated into three parts and each of the parts has isolated functions. An ultrasonic sensor is installed in the perceptual module, which is the head, to observe the terrain. Functional module, which between the other two parts, will be designed by clients if they want extra functions. A battery is set in the energy module, which is the abdomen, to supply energy to the whole robot. Additionally, a pair of legs is set on each of the three parts to correspond the three parts of the robot with the three somites of insect. A special mechanism is used for linking the parts.
