Abstract It is well known that animals and insects have flexible neck that helps them turn their head around in order to obtain a board view or balance their body. However, most robots currently do not possess this bionic structure. Here, we designed a novel segmented head-body hexapod robot that consists of a dual shafts servo between the robot's head with front legs and the body with middle and rear legs. The additional feature provides an extra degree of freedom that allows the hexapod robot to perform actions such as raising and lowering their head. As regards to the mechanical design, this robot has six "C" shaped legs that are fabricated by multi-layer spring steel, which distributes the amount of strain experienced on the robot walk. Furthermore, its structural base is made with carbon fiber that is firm and light, which provides excellent strength to weight ratio in comparison with other materials. After simulation experiments, our robot revealed a strong self-adaptability when it walks in complex terrains and a noticeable improvement in the capability of negotiating in steep terrain.
