Reports from seven northern states indicated that of all accidents involving skidding 18% occurred on wet pavements and 40% on ice and snow pavements; in Great Britain, in 1 yr, 73% of all skidding accidents occurred on similar ice and snow surfaces; indoor and outdoor test procedures in obtaining tire friction values on ice and snow covered surfaces are considered together with equipment and instrumentation needed, and forces which affect test results; much progress has been made in increased tire traction through tread design and tire additives.
