Survey of work during past 10 yr, with reference to various types of ships; it is suggested remarkable features are increase in size and specialization of ships; especially, size of tankers has grown steadily larger and vessels of 270,000 tons dw are to be built; topics are -- longitudinal, transverse, and local strength of ship hull; cargo oil tanks; container ships; use of high tensile steel; vibrations; various measurements on actual ships; brittle fracture, and fatigue.
